Tungsten-Rhenium (WRe)
Tungsten-Rhenium Wire, Flat Wire, and Rod
Tungsten-Rhenium
Tungsten–25% Rhenium (WRe) has traditionally been used as wire for thermocouples. Today, growing demand for high-temperature structural components has led to advanced processing of tungsten–rhenium and tungsten–rhenium with hafnium carbide, which enhances strength in extreme environments. These materials are widely used in aerospace, medical, furnace, heat treating, and joining applications.
With a melting point of ~3050°C and a recrystallization temperature near 1900°C, tungsten–rhenium alloys are ideal for aerospace, temperature measurement, and friction stir welding, including Rhenium Alloys’ DuraStir line of FSW tools.
Adding rhenium to tungsten improves ductility and reduces brittleness after high-temperature exposure. It also raises recrystallization temperature, increases strength, and lowers the ductile-to-brittle transition—benefits known as the “rhenium effect.”

Tungsten-Rhenium Products
Tungsten alloys serve a wide range of applications in electronics, furnace, joining, and aerospace industries. Precise alloying adds both ductility and strength to suit customer specifications. In addition to the following products, Tungsten-Rhenium alloys are used in friction stir welding applications, such as Rhenium Alloys’ Durastir line of tools.
- Wire products
- Flat wire products
- Rod
Made in the USA
Our Tungsten alloy products, including Tungsten-Rhenium wire, rod, and flat wire are proudly manufactured in the United States.
Tungsten-Rhenium Products
Tungsten-Rhenium Wire Products
Rhenium Alloys provides a wide range of wire products to serve applications in major electronics products, thermocouples, high temperature furnace parts, and welding requirements.
If your wire needs to have the smallest diameter with the highest strength, Tungsten-Rhenium Wire is the wire to use. Another benefit of WRe wire is elevated specific resistance at the hot and vibration strength. Tungsten-Rhenium Wire has a density almost equal to Tungsten Wire, and is commonly used in thermocouples and electronics products.
All wire compositions are available in a full range of sizes (as small as .001”) to meet your requirements.
We also offer:
- Rhenium wire
- Molybdenum-rhenium wire
- Tungsten wire
Tungsten-Rhenium Flat Wire
As one of the few producers in the Americas offering this capability, we manufacture precision flat wire in multiple forms:
Types:
Rolled (as thin as .004" with a standard tolerance of .0004")
Drawn
Etched
Secondary operations:
Etching
Ultrasonic cleaning
Tungsten-Rhenium Rod (Bar)
Tungsten-Rhenium rod (bar) products are available in a broad range of sizes (up to 6” in diameter) and customized solutions.
Tungsten-Rhenium alloys serve a wide range of applications in electronics, furnace, joining, and aerospace industries. Precise alloying of Rhenium with these other refractory metals adds both ductility and strength to suit customer specifications.
